Music

    Music is given a high priority at Fleet and there is a strong culture of participation and enjoyment in this subject throughout the school.

    Intent

    • Every child performs, listens to, reviews and evaluates music.
    • Every child understands and explores how music is created, produced and communicated.
    • Every child learns recorder for a year and either trumpet or trombone for two years.
    • Every child participates in whole class and whole school music performances.
    • Every child participates in weekly singing assemblies.

    Implementation

    The music curriculum ensures children sing, listen, play, perform and evaluate. This is embedded in classroom activities as well as the weekly singing assemblies, termly Music performance assemblies, Christmas shows, the learning of recorders, trumpets and trombones, and the extra-curricular clubs. In year 3 children learn the recorder, whilst in Years 4 and 5, they learn either the trumpet or trombone. They learning basic notation and the different skills required to create musical sounds. Composing and performing using body percussion, vocal sounds, and garageband are taught across KS1 and KS2, developing understanding of musical elements without the added complexity of an instrument. Some children choose to create their own rock bands and are supported to use school spaces to independently develop these groups. Opportunities are offered through the Camden Music Hub to perform alongside other schools, both singing and playing instruments.

    Impact

    Children have access to a varied programme, which allows them to discover areas of strength, as well as areas they might like to improve upon. Children will develop both musically both individually and as part of a group. They are able to enjoy music, in as many ways as they choose – either as listener, creator or performer. They can sing and feel a pulse, add rhythms, and listen to each other. Many choose to participate in wider musical activities and develop a love of music.
