Pupil Premium

    The Department for Education issued the following information in December 2012:

    The Government believes that the Pupil Premium, which is additional to main school funding, is the best way to address the current underlying inequalities between children eligible for free school meals (FSM) and their peers by ensuring that funding to tackle disadvantage reaches the pupils who need it most.

    The Pupil Premium was introduced in April 2011 and is allocated to schools to work with pupils who have been registered for free school meals at any point in the last six years (known as ‘Ever 6 FSM’).

    Schools also receive funding for children who have been looked after continuously for more than six months, and children of service personnel.

    At Fleet, our aim is for all pupils to make good progress in maths and literacy enabling them to reach the highest levels.

    We use this pupil premium funding to ensure that we meet those aims for all our children regardless of their background and we aim to close the gaps between disadvantaged children and their peers. Some of the ways we do this is to engage all pupils through an enriched topic based curriculum, performing arts, trips, clubs and breakfast club as well as specific interventions.

    We prioritise the funding to support all FSM/Ever 6 pupils who are either under-achieving or in danger of under-achieving and to raise aspirations. The Pupil Premium is used to fund the following strategies:

    • Interventions that support individual children or small groups with specific specialised teaching, particularly in maths and English
    • Self and peer assessment by teaching pupils specific strategies to set goals, monitor and evaluate their own learning
    • One to one tuition is where pupils were given intensive tuition, during and after school
    • Social and emotional support through the work of the learning menotr
    • Curriculum enrichment through the arts and sport giving pupils an opportunity to develop confidence and skills through widing the opportunities they would otherwise have such as visiting museums, learning to play instruments or enjoy sporting skills
    • An extended school programme offering a wide range of extracurricular clubs both before and after school

    Our key ethos and aims include:

    • Fleet Primary School adopts a whole school approach with all staff accountable for our pupil premium pupils. Pupil premium is a key focus for the senior leadership team
    • Our aim is that there should be no gap in progress or attainment between pupil premium pupils and non-pupil premium pupils. Where gaps exist, they are discussed and targeted in assessment and monitoring discussions
    • Pupil premium funds will be used to directly benefit and target pupil premium pupils, they will be specifically tailored to meet their individual needs and the provision will include ways which are in addition to and different from other intervention programs were needed.

    All expenditure is evaluated using key performance indicators, including attendance, attainment, progress and punctuality:

    • Pupil premium is a key focus of teaching and learning and plays a crucial part in planning, monitoring and assessment
    • Direct involvement by all stakeholders. Teachers report to SLT, who analyse and plan responses to issues that arise. They report to governors. We have a Pupil Premium Governor who is specifically tasked with ensuring the effectiveness of the school’s strategy is challenged
    • Governors, especially our Pupil Premium governor, are fully involved in the monitoring and evaluation of the Pupil Premium interventions, analysis and costings

    Due to the positive impact of our previous Pupil Premium spend many of the approaches adopted last year are being continued.

    A rigorous and thorough assessment process for all our pupil premium pupils and the groups within the pupil premium (including SEN pupils) and provision management ensures that any support or intervention is value for money.

    We will continue to work with Camden, through the Primary Partnership Teaching School Alliance, as well as our Cluster of local schools, to develop innovative practice. This collaboration will support our aim to ensure we utilise our pupil premium resources to the utmost effect.
